The University of Mississippi School of Law became the fourth state-supported law school in the nation in 1854, almost ten years after the university opened its doors in 1848. The state legislature recognized a need for formal law instruction in Mississippi, and the “Department of Law” as it was titled, was established. In January 2011, the law program moved into a new home named for Robert C. Khayat, a law professor who had served as chancellor of the university from 1995 to 2009. A LEED-certified building located on the south end of the campus and designed with students’ needs in mind, its architecture blends in well with the beauty of the Ole Miss campus.

We offer a Juris Doctor, a Juris Doctor/Master of Taxation and a Juris Doctor/Master of Accountancy, as well as a certificate program in criminal law. View our full curriculum.
  • Career Services: The Career Services Office helps students develop individualized career plans, provides instruction on job-search skills and facilitates access to employers and employment resources, as well as actively recruits law firms, judges, government agencies, public interest organizations and other prospective legal employers to interview and hire our graduates. Graduates have gone on to private practice and have also found rewarding jobs at NASA, Stennis Space Center, the U.S. Senate, KPMG, U.S. Tax Court and U.S. district and Mississippi state courts.
  • Student Leadership: More than 20 student organizations, such as the Law School Student Body Association, American Constitution Society, Black Law Students Association and the Environmental Law Society, provide a balance of academic, social and service opportunities, helping to develop leadership skills to aid you in your legal profession.

Cool College Town

Named by Travel & Leisure magazine as one of the “top 10 coolest college towns in America,” Oxford boasts attractions such as those on the Courthouse Square, William Faulkner’s Rowan Oak and the annual Double Decker Arts Festival to make it the ideal combination of historic and hip. If you like the outdoors, you’ll find fishing, camping and water sports at Sardis Lake. If you enjoy attending sports events, then tailgating in the Grove can’t be beaten! In fact, Sports Illustrated rated it No. 3 of 100 things to do before graduating.

Highly Affordable

With affordable tuition for Mississippi residents and nonresidents, students graduate from our law school with a lower debt load than the national average, allowing them to go into public service or other practice areas more easily. PreLaw magazine has ranked us fifth in the nation in its list of Best Value Law Schools.

State-of-the-Art Facility

Designed to enhance clinical experiences for students, our law center is the only LEED-certified building in the state. It features a student lounge and courtyard, student organizations suite, group study rooms, Career Services interview rooms, Moot Court suite, café and dining room. Classrooms with advanced technology offer an outstanding learning environment for our students. The center also holds suites for our various legal clinics, the Mississippi Law Journal, and has a lecture theater seating 220 people.

Strong Alumni Networks

Our nearly 7,000 living alumni practice all over the world, providing a solid networking system for students looking for a job, a mentor or real-world experience. Noteworthy alumni include writer John Grisham, Memphis Mayor A.C. Wharton, U.S. Senators Roger Wicker and Thad Cochran, and assistant chief counsel for NASA-Stennis Meredith Blasingame.

Faculty: Scholarship Based on Real-world Experience

Because of their experience as practicing lawyers and their cutting-edge research, our faculty members excel at preparing students for legal practice. They also have diverse interests and experiences to serve our students and surrounding communities, as well as the global community. Beyond the classroom, the law school faculty is at the forefront of emerging scholarship in a number of disciplines.

Global Reach

Not only do our students obtain great jobs across the South, many of our graduates have gone on to private practice and public service all over the nation and world. Our scope stretches from the east coast to the west coast and beyond.

Hospitable Culture

We continually hear our law faculty, administration, and students are some of the friendliest around. We’re dedicated to our students’ success, and with a low student-to-faculty ratio, students have every opportunity to get the help and support they need. And, our new facility is designed specifically to encourage community interaction both among students and between students and faculty.
